Steam Achieves Record-Breaking Revenue in First Half of Year
The PC gaming marketplace, Steam, has achieved an unprecedented financial milestone in the first half of the current year, indicating robust growth within the industry despite broader economic challenges.

Steam's Surge: A New Financial Peak in PC Gaming

Record-Setting Performance: Steam's Historic Half-Year Earnings

In a significant development for the gaming industry, Valve's digital distribution platform, Steam, recorded its highest-ever gross revenue in the first half of 2026. According to an analysis by Alinea Analytics, the platform raked in an estimated .1 billion, showcasing a remarkable 14.5% increase over the same period in 2025. This achievement is particularly notable as it surpasses even the holiday-boosted second half of 2025 by 8%, traditionally the strongest period for sales due to seasonal promotions and gift-buying.

Driving Forces Behind the Revenue Boom: New Titles and Publisher Returns

Several key factors have contributed to Steam's impressive financial surge. The market has seen a trend of higher pricing for new game releases, which has naturally inflated revenue figures. Additionally, the emergence of highly successful multiplayer games, often referred to as 'friendslop' titles, has generated substantial income. The return of major game publishers, such as Ubisoft, to the Steam platform after previous attempts to establish their own digital storefronts, has also significantly bolstered the content library and sales volume on the platform.

Long-Term Trajectory: Consistent Growth and Evolving Sales Patterns

This recent success is not an isolated event but rather a continuation of a sustained upward trend for Steam. Over the past decade, the platform's annual revenue has soared from .5 billion in 2017 to approximately billion by 2025. An interesting shift in revenue composition is also evident: a growing proportion of sales now comes from older, established titles. In 2026, only 21% of Steam's revenue was generated by games released within that year, a decrease from 29% in 2024, indicating the enduring appeal and sales longevity of its extensive catalog.

Top Performers and Industry Paradoxes: Success Amidst Turmoil

Despite the increasing reliance on older games for revenue, new releases continue to be significant contributors. The top five new games in terms of gross revenue for 2026 include Forza Horizon 6, Resident Evil Requiem, Crimson Desert, Slay the Spire 2, and Subnautica 2, with Meccha Chameleon closely following in sixth place. However, this financial prosperity exists alongside industry instability, particularly the recent layoffs and studio closures by major entities like Xbox. This juxtaposition highlights a paradoxical situation where the gaming market is thriving, yet its foundational creative teams often face precarity.
