Uncover the Extraordinary in School Days

Students: The Heart of School Life

Students from the Washington Irving Elementary School in Tarrytown are truly at the center of educational experiences. Take, for instance, the theater residency program that has given them a taste of the limelight like never before. This isn't just any ordinary limelight; it's a chance for them to explore the art and craft of acting on the stage of the Tarrytown Music Hall. Since 1980, this venue has been a part of history, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For several weeks, these elementary school students have been rehearsing a production of Beauty and the Beast Jr., a scaled-down version designed for younger actors. This program is set to culminate in performances on November 21 and 22. Kevin Kearins, who runs the theater residency program at the music hall, shares that 100 students from Washington Irving School are actively involved. By having multiple actors play the same part in different scenes, every student gets the opportunity to have a speaking role, making them all feel part of the production.

The Music Hall: A Partner in Education

The Tarrytown Music Hall has been a remarkable partner with the local schools for about five years. It presents one production every school year, providing a platform for students to showcase their talents. Sharon O’Grady, the principal at the Washington Irving School, views this theater residency as a unique opportunity for students to delve into the performing arts. It allows them to develop creativity, enhance collaboration skills, and boost self-confidence. As she said, “This initiative enriches students’ arts education and builds a shared sense of accomplishment and support across the school.” The impact of this partnership is truly significant.

Students' Perspectives: Inclusion and Happiness

Mercer Gottlock, a fifth-grade student, values the fact that every student gets a part in the production. As he puts it, “no one is left out.” He appreciates the nice and welcoming environment where there isn't too much pressure. Ronan Geffrard, another fifth-grader, also loves that everyone in the production gets a role and can change if they're not comfortable. He emphasizes, “I love the choreography and the lines. It just makes me happy.” These students' perspectives highlight the positive impact of the theater residency program on their school lives.
